New media

Project identification & Ideas creation

The rational towards which this project will be based on is an upcoming event for Devso Music. Devesh Sodha creates epic movie scores as a living and has a part time contract with Hollywood, creating small minuet scores for the NFL and the NBA. His dream would be to score music for well-known companies and blockbuster films.  To help him on his journey he is organising a live orchestral concert at the Fraser Noble Theatre based in Leicester.

For this assignment I have chosen to base this on him as I feel like it may be beneficial for him as well as myself. The assignment will be solely based for myself however if he does need certain elements, then it is there for him to use.

The way in which I will approach this is to think outside the box and produce something that hasn’t been done before. Something built around him that is unique as he has many themes and elements towards his music.

The idea that I came up with was to create Posters for him solely based on the upcoming event next year. Using elements from each music video that he has produced, I will combine them all into one, making it more unique and different towards what has already been produced. Also creating business cards to show a range of techniques, which I can offer and producing a short trailer for my blog.

Having helped work on some of his music videos, I have the advantage of knowing how he works and what he needs if he did decide to take on what I have produced. Having worked with Adobe After Affects I will use some graphical elements to help enrich the trailer concept, which I am planning to make.

To create the posters and business cards I will be using Adobe Photoshop, the reason for this is because I have worked with Photoshop for a long time now and feel that it’s a reliable program which will help me produce what I need.

The poster design will illustrate a form of art among a background of stars. I have gone for a space theme as I feel like this element could be used more through his work and that it fits well with each element that he has produced I may also include some photography elements to help me expand on the media usage side as I would like to use it to it’s full potential.

Looking at the positive side of this project I feel that it will help me expand my skills and techniques. I haven’t used After Effects in a long time so I feel that going back to it will help me expand my skills more. Being able to use graphical elements will make the project more visualising. This is the approach I want to take, as it’s something I enjoy quite a lot.

The negative side towards this project would be based on the fact that he may or may not like what I have produced, however may not affect me as this project is solely based for this assignment however it would be nice to help him out at the same time.

To conclude I feel like this is a project that I will gain a lot of skills from and may or may not help Devesh on his path to being a successful music composer. Using different types of mediums will help me gain more experimentation, which could lead to learning new skills towards other upcoming projects.

Devesh

A young talented composure based in Leicester who has amazing skills when it comes to creating epic movie scores. I have known him my whole life and have seen the evolution of where he was and where he is now. He currently has a part time contract with Hollywood through a company called Warner Chapple, a sister company to Warner Brothers. He has worked for Nike, created small scores for teasers for the NFL and many more.

He is looking to create his very own live orchestral performance at the Curve theatre. He will be using a live choir and an orchestral group which have a vast range of instruments. As i am his cousin i know what he likes and right now his music is based around the theme of space and that it's unique to him within what he does.

My task is to create different forms of marketing techniques based around him and the theme of space. As he is doing a live performance, i felt that it would be a good idea to create something that relates to it and that it links towards the assignment as well.
Inspiration

Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer has a huge part to play with my inspiration of developing my designs around my cousin. Hans also has a huge influence within Devesh's work and believes that one day he would be able to collaborate with the man himself.

Hans Zimmer is known world wide for his epic film scores he produces for big block buster films, films such as The Pirates of the Caribbean, Interstellar, Kung fu Panda and more.  As he just recently toured, me and my cousin both went to see him live at the SSE Arena in London. My cousin and i were both inspired by what we had seen and felt like we had to do something about it.

My work will be influenced by the way the marketing was done for the Hans Zimmer's live tour and replicate it my own way, creating something brand new and unique for my cousin.

Logo ideas

The first step that i took was to create a logo for Devesh before i could tackle anything else. I first researched the procedures in which were needed to create a music based logo.

This first logo that i looked was based on a small music composing group who create music within the same industry as Devesh. Looking at the logo concept i feel that it has been designed well as it is simple and yet effective. From what i can see is that the main logo has been created as a vector format and then imported into photoshop. The reason why i have assumed this is due to the compression of the image and the quality. If it were a vector it would be less pixelated.

A game that me and Devesh both enjoy is a game called Destiny, the reason for it is the fact that it is based in space and is a first/third person shooter. The music that is used within the game inspires Devso when it comes to composing music based upon space. So i thought of looking into the way the Destiny logo was produced. I feel that it is very iconic with the usage of a shape within the text. This is a technique used to make the logo rememberable towards the audience.
A technique i used when making the final logo,
using this as a huge influence.

Analysing more logo concepts i came across this space.com logo and felt that the way the logo had been produced would be some what perfect for when constructing the design for Devesh. As you can see this was a huge influence within creating my draft logo, however at the time i felt the the arch within the logo would be better off with having a gradient blue colour to symbolise planet earth. I then played around the the layout of the text to make the arch more noticeable for the eye.

This is a concept that Devesh created for himself at the development stage of his music career. As you can see it is very pixelated and needs redoing primarily due to the quality of the the image. So i took his original idea into perspective and tried making something unique with the concepts i had researched to make something more unique to him.

My logo ideas
1. This first concept  of the logo was created on  photoshop, the reason for this was due to the usage of an outer glow to give a neon effect towards the logo. I then used a directional blur with a gradient to give a filmic feel. I felt that this logo would be bad for print due to the gradient usage.

2. The second concept was influenced from the space.com logo. The reason for this is due to the
arch and how it symbolises a planet. A huge connection towards the connection between space and my cousin Devesh. Another downside
to this is the gradient, the quality of the logo maybe distorted within print so i had to go back to the drawing board.

3. The third logo was a revamp of Devesh's original logo, as you can see i have made the resolution of the logo higher than what it was. However it is still the same as the current logo so i felt that this is no good what so ever as i wanted to create something more unique.
4. The final logo concept i had made on Illustrator creating a vector format of the image. I feel that this concept has a combination of all my other inspiration. Thus creating the ideal design for the concept Devso needs to market himself and his show. The usage of the huge V makes the logo iconic which was a technique i used similarly to the Destiny logo/Space.com.

After presenting Devesh the logo concepts, he felt that the last one would be beneficial for him as he feels that it represents him for being bold and wishes to become iconic later on in the future. Just like his inspiration Hans Zimmer.

Posters

Running along the theme of Hans Zimmer, i researched a few of his posters that he had used during his live tour. As Devesh is a massive fan of this iconic composure, i felt that it would be ideal to use this particular poster as influence for creating something brand new for himself.

The poster design i really like the way the colour scheme has been used, such as using the colour purple within the background but also having some of the text/ text boxes purple as well. Creating a running theme through out the poster. It makes it clean and eye catching which i a technique i would like to incorporate within creating my own concepts.

Looking at regular posters of normal music artists i was able to find the ways in which their posters are created, the it promotes them and the tour that they are doing. Looking at it from a graphic designers perspective i feel that the layout of the poster has been designed well as it's informative, eye catching and goes with the theme of being a "baller". Being able to create a design that fits the theme requires a huge range of techniques making sure that it is perfect. I feel that i need to learn from this concept to be able to get the final product for the poster concept. However the only thing i have to criticize is the poster with is that i feel like the usage of colours could maybe explored a little bit more i.e the colour purple represents wealth. So maybe incorporating this symbolise may enhance the theme to the poster.

Basslights poster really has caught my eye with the concept, it almost gives a Tron feel which relates to time and future. The concept of the poster is catches the audiences eyes and hold the iconic logo which represents them. Being at the top of the poster makes it easy for the audience to notice what it is and who it is about. The only thing i don't like the poster is that the information on it has very little information about the band or when and where they will be touring. They have written this in a small print which makes it hard for people to notice. During the concept of creating my posters i will ensure that the text used will be eye catching and easy to read.

Creating the posters

Creating the posters i used a software called Adobe Photoshop, The reason why i chose to use Photoshop for the structure of the poster rather than using Illustrator is because i personally feel comfortable using the tools and techniques to be able to create a finished poster that i would be proud of and yet represent Devso at the same time.

1.The first poster concept that i had created was very generic and i had to scrap as i didn't like it at all. The reason for this was mainly due to the logo used and the composition of the image is off which will not enable me to put text over it, if i tried the contrast of white and black would both clash with the background colour. However i felt that it's a good idea to show where the flaws were and the journey i took to get the final concept.

The idea was to create a portrait poster which is normally used within marketing. Such as posters outside venues and so on. As i had tried to follow the traditional techniques but failed to see the clash of colours before half way of making the final poster, hence why it is not finished.

2. Poster 2

Poster concept 2 was meant to be the final poster concept however after viewing it with my tutor, we both noticed flaws within the poster design. Flaws such as to much text on the poster as it feels crammed as well as sticking to fonts along the same theme. If i use different fonts, it makes the design of the poster unpleasant and inconsistent.

To correct this i then opened up the poster on Photoshop and redesigned some of the features presented on the poster. By doing this i was able to play around with more techniques, creating more of a personalised poster than before. Working on a 297mm x 210mm work space of a resolution of 300, enables me to have a decent print sized poster without having pixelated elements within the design.

Final poster design is just as similar as the previous one, however i made a few adjustments to fit the criteria needed so that the poster was aesthetically pleasing.

The poster concept mainly comes from the Hans Zimmer design however i have had some techniques implemented from the other researched designs.

By doing this i am showing that i am able to follow my influences designs and yet having my own uniq style to the poster.

Development of Business cards

The next step that i took was to create business cards for his company solely to help him branch out his business and to show what techniques i have to produce professional business cards. I first looked into researching other business cards to get a wider range of ideas to create the final business card concept.

Concept 1
This concept was found on a website called Businesscardjournal.com, which is similar to vista print, how ever the designs on this site are more unique in comparison to Vista print. I like this concept due to the layout of the card and the contrast of colours used. Its well designed and very informative.

Concept 2
This concept is based around the design and solely the design. There is less information and the design does not go with what the company represents. This does not look like a hair based card design. From this concept i want to avoid creating a design that does not reflect the business. A technique upon which i need to focus on to create the ideal business card.
Concept 3
The final business card concept that i will be analysing is the Watches for Wales card. This card has an embellished fished with a bronze foil design layered onto of it. This makes the card look rich and sophisticated. Also having an imprinted patter design shows that the card/company have a certain standard. Representation is key and would like to follow these ideals to create the perfect business card.

My Business cards

Here are the final business card concepts that i had created using Adobe photoshop. I had created the designs on a 3.5 x 2inches  of canvas plus bleed to ensure a professional looking business card for Devso music. The idea was to create the front side of the card with a shot of the Galaxy with Devso's logo incorporated into it. I used the colour purple to keep to the running theme as Purple is his favourite colour thus making the card more personalised and meaningful to the owner of the business/ card. The usage of a drop shadow on the logo PNG file pushes the logo forward, making it more noticeable and eye catching.

The back of the card i had created a bokeh effect using my camera and alternating the blur onto some LED lights to give this effect. I then change the hue to a blue colour which contrasts well with the purple, trying to maintain a running theme through out. The concept of the card was made simple so that it was easy to read and people knew what the cards purpose was whilst keeping a simplistic feel to it. I had followed the techniques used on the Watches for Wales card as the use of colour on a black background bring it out as it creates a form of contrast. Thus getting ideas from my research to then create something brand new and unique at the same time.

Creating the Trailer for Devso Music

Creating a trailer that advertises Devesh and what he does would be an amazing project to pursue. The reason for this is mainly due to the marketing advantages towards making a small trailer. By doing this i am enabling more than one thing happen with just a small amount of time. With the usage of music and visualisations i will be able to capture more of the audiences eyes and bring them in, wanting them to find out more about what Devso does and what his compositions sound like.

Hans Zimmer being a huge influence within Devso music, i thought it would be a good idea to analyse one of his tour videos. The reason for this is due to the linkage in which both Hans and Devso base their music. This trailer uses a mixture of video footage and some form of graphics within the titles of each segment. A technique which may come in  handy when it comes to making the final trailer.

The trailer here shown is for a rave movement within the EDM music raves. This trailer consists of more graphical elements than video footage. I personally like the way the graphics are used and it makes the trailer very visualising towards the audience members. Another technique i will consider when making the trailer.

The Trailer
The trailer which was constructed to piece together Devso tour for the Curve Theatre was produced through the element of graphics and video. After Effects gave me the opportunity to construct a graphical  advert. Using tutorials to help me navigate and construct and small video piece. Learning how a key frame of a sequence can alter something within the video piece. Building on layers adds greater detail to the graphical elements such as creating a lens-flare and layering that on top of another video element to combine two pieces into one. As it was a new software for me to use i was weak in some elements and techniques. To get the final result for what i needed i watched numerous tutorials to help guide when making the video.

This video was a small little teaser created fro Devso so that it could preview his music and yet teaser the audiences towards whats going on and what he does. Even though the video is short and doesn't say much about what's going on. I thought i would create a video piece which shows his music and let the music speak for what it is. His work is high quality so i thought it would be a good idea to show off his work by using such methods. a mixture of stock footage and footage created using After Effects gave me the video element which i thought would best suit the trailer.

Being able to travel around with Devso to capture live Orchestral footage gave the teaser more of a professional element towards the trailer and that it made the video more appealing. Similar to Hans Zimmer's trailer video. Trying to time the video with the music was tricky but slowly through learning different techniques i was able to perfect the sound a long side with the video.

Photography final

Introduction

For this assignment I will be documenting and researching the life of an Asian through todays British culture. The typical stereotypes for a brown person these days are reflected on incidents such as 911. So to some people, brown Asians within British culture are sometimes portrayed as being terrorists. This assignment will demonstrate the Hindu culture and the way we as a religion try to blend in within todays society.

I will be researching artists who have chosen to go down the same root; illustrating culture and the differences between todays modern world and how different it may seem to others who are unaware of what goes on.

The use of documentary photography will play a huge part within this final assignment, this is due to the fact that i can show whats going on within that moment, capturing the expressions and surroundings that will show how different cultures may have a link with one and other and if they don't, being able to show it in such an elegant way will help people understand who we are and what we  are like as a culture. Just because we are brown does not mean we are terrorists and the concepts that will be shown will help highlight what goes on behind closed doors.

They way in which i will be portraying my work will be in the form of photography, creating dip-pics to show the sequence of the images or to highlight a meaning between the images used on that page. Images hold a lot of meaning and can portray many meanings to the spectator. I will try and use this technique to explain the culture with out using words to describe whats going on. Letting the viewer interact with the image and creating a meaning for themselves to reflect on.

Influences

Mitchell Kanashkevich

Mitchell Kanashkevich is a underground photographer who takes pride within his work that he produces. He focuses on close up images of people within their background. Illustrating who they are, where they are and what they are doing. This gives the audience a wide range of thoughts to think about whats going on inside the image and letting the image speak for itself. I love the way he draws upon culture just through the way he angles the camera and the themes in which he choses to create such products. As a photographer you have a wide range of subjects to take photos of and knowing what he likes to capture gives me a huge influence upon what i want to do and base my ideas upon.
This image seen is an amazing image in which he has
captured two little girls within a mid shot. Drawing upon their clothes and what they are doing in the image gives us a sense of culture and that seeing their hands and faces are dirty makes us think these girls come from a poor background. However in this image seeing them happy and smiling shows money isn't everything and that knowing where they are they still remain happy. An amazing technique used within his photography as it gives such a huge meaning towards his work. Letting the images speak for themselves.

In this image it portrays an elder woman in her traditional clothing smoking a cigarette. The use of colour gives such a dynamic contrast to the image and the use of a close up highlights the features on the subject. We can see that the woman is old and is from a cultured background however knowing that she's smoking gives us a imagery of the use of a clash of cultures. Smoking is normally a Western thing and is normally seen in films with glamour female stars he make this elegant. Having two different backgrounds plays on your mind which gives us a sense of we are all one no matter what we do and what we believe. Another theory of how imagery can become so powerful. A technique i would love to adapt to within my work.

________________________________________________________________________

Robert Leon

Robert Leon, another Photographer who focuses his ideas of culture, as he travels around the world he is able to capture culture through the usage of closeups of body parts i.e feet and hands portraying the hard work and struggles these people go through through the use of photography.

This image here portrays an individual wearing sandals, As the subject is covered in dirt and the texture of the skin shows how much of a struggle this person has to go through. Highlights to us as the audience that this person comes from a poor background. Just from the use of imagery it highlights to us as the viewer, how he or she copes with day to day life. A good use of a close up, highlighting the detail of the feet, this then lets the audience imagine if this person is a man or woman.

A place in time

Introduction
For this project i will be creating a range of images based on my trip to Paris, capturing all the elements of the French tradition. Two days before i came back to the UK, the tragic terror attack happened within Paris which shook the world. Due to this i then changed the concept of the project and captured it in the sense that i was there when it happened. Using the images as different stages of when the even happened. In the form of the calm before the storm.

Here are examples of people who had influenced me with my ideas for the final outcome:

Influential Artists

Henri Cartier Bresson
Henri Bresson who is Famous for his compositions based around Paris and other places expressing certain elements that would show the life style of that place within that time. He has worked with many artists such as Salvador Dali and many more. As he is famous for his work i feel that he heavily influences me with the way he produces his work through the usage of old, vintage film which gives a black and white filter towards his images. I enjoy the usage of black and white because it gives a old texture towards the image. For example:
This image that was taken in the heart of Paris illustrates two different movements within the image. The first one is the couple within the background holding each other within that moment where as the man with the umbrella jumping shows that he has no time for romance and that he is in a rush. An amazing photo that was taken at the right moment.  I wish to use this technique so that i can get the image at the right moment knowing what i want and how i want it just using one click rather than a range of clicks. A technique Henry used within all of his images. This required forward thinking and planning making sure that the camera was set ready for that perfect image.

Martin Parr

A well known British photographer who is well known for his extravagant work based on the British public. He is well known for using artificial lighting within his work. This technique creates a fake type of lighting making the images seem very bright and colourful. He specialises within street art and brings to life the essence of the British public.

What i like about his work is that he sticks to a specific theme within his work to carry out the theme trough out. An amazing technique which highlights the fact that he knows what he is doing with is work and how he likes to capture his subject to portray some form of meaning behind the image.

Here an example of his work using bright light to capture the subject within there element:

This example illustrates a lot of his work as he uses flash within his images even though it is daytime. This gives an over exposure towards his images.

This image is meant to portray the typical life of a Brit on holiday. creating a bright exposure almost makes the image seem so basic yet interesting as there is a lot going on within the background.

A technique that i would pick up on from Martin Parr would be to analyse the background before taking the image making sure i have the perfect image.

Alfred Eisenstaedt

A well known photojournalist/ photographer who has famous works within in many of the media imagery. One of his main images which he had captured was a famous shot of the end of WW2 with the couple celebrating by embracing each other.

His work also involved working a lot with celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and so on.

As you can see this is a portrait image of the couple embracing each other in the middle of New York at the time WW2 had ended. The composition of this picture is well planned out as it focuses on the couple as well as the surrounding, enabling us as the audience to understand what is going on within the background.

The usage of black and white shows that this is a vintage photo taken awhile ago. A good use of black and white as it gives a form of emotion behind the image.

This image is a very influential image which has helped me plan out how i want to structure my images by using the background as well as the subject all in one image.

Contact Sheet

Images

A landscape shot of the Eiffel tower, this was taken from a 18-55mm lens. I took this image using a tripod as i had to set the shutter speed for 5". By doing this i was able to capture all the light within the shot without over exposing the image.

Another landscape shot of a sunset in Paris just before my flight was due. This was taken on Program mode as it enabled me to mess around more with the setting of the exposer. The reason for this was so that i could get the right colour for the sunset using a 18-55mm lens.

A portrait shot of when i went to Disney Land, This shot was taken using the influence of composition. Trying align the road along side the castle. The usage of the Banner at the top is meant to influence where the image has been taken as long as the castle.

This image was taken with a 18-55mm lens and i used the HDR setting to enhance the building and the sky around it.
Not to sure about this image as it is very blurry and that it's under exposed. However the meaning behind this enhances the calm before the storm. Going back to UK before the tragic event takes place.

This was taken with a shutter speed of 1", i found that it was a difficult shot to take as i was moving and my hands were shaking. If i had a tripod and the flight was more steady i believe i could have got a better image.
This image was to show a form of movement through the usage of a ride. I shot this image with a lower exposure which gave a darker feel towards the image. I then selected the shutter speed to 1". By slowing the shutter speed down this enables more light to go into the sensor of the camera. By lowering the exposure i am able to meet it in the middle to get the best of both worlds without over exposing the image. I was able to balance the camera onto a side rail to replicate a tripod, hence why i was able to get such a study shot.

A landscape image of the Disney land castle using a standard 18-55mm. By using a standard lens i am able to capture the object/subject without cropping the essential elements of the image out. I believe that this was one of my weaker images as i tried to capture the darkness of the image however i over exposed the image making it seem like i took the image more towards the evening rather than at night. To improve this image i would plan more ahead to make sure i correct this mistake and to ensure that i get the image at the right moment.

This image of niece was taken with an 18-55mm lens, the reason for this was because of how close i was to her. Being able to use a shorter lens helped me capture my niece naturally looking outside the window as we made our way into central Paris. This is similar to Martin Parr's technique as the use of flash was used but not to much to give that Martin Parr feel. The use of natural light makes the lighting balance out which i am happy with as it's not over exposed and looks natural.
A moment after the previous image was taken i was able to capture this shot. I really like this shot as it shows a father and daughter relationship. The father being the mature adult, he is left with taking care of the train tickets and money where as my niece is looking directly at me pulling a funny face. This symbolises that she has no stress and can do what ever she wants. showing opposites just like the way Martin Parr illustrates the typical British lifestyle.
For this image i was going for more of a Henry Bresson feel. What i mean by this is the way in which he captures the environment around him.
This image is of the Notre Dame building in Paris and i tried to capture the path as well as the building. This is a basic image and i feel that if i had made the image portrait and zoomed in a little more, i would be able to focus more on the building itself.
This image was highly influenced by Martin Parr, the reason for this is due to the fact it's a natural shot. Capturing the life style of Paris and how people make a living. As the subject has a pigeon on his head it shows that he stands out from the crowd. I took this image without looking through the view finder only due to the fact that the pigeon may have flown off so i tried to be as quick as possible to capture the image. To make this image more effective i should have used the 55-300mm lens and to focus on the man more to get more of an effect.

This image here is of my sisters family, a use for symbolism as it shows that the family is united walking down the path. The usage of having more people within the horizon shows a different meaning to the image. Creating maybe a sense of relief. A strong image as this relates to the who Paris situation.

This portrait image of a man fishing in the river shows the natural life style of people in Paris and what they do to pass time. I really like this image because of the way it captures the man in his own world.

This image was taken using a telephoto lens as i was far away from the subject. If i was closer to the subject i feel that i would have gained a better effect within the image.

i used 55-300mm lens and i reduced the aperture down to F5, i tried to blur out the background however if i was closer i would have been more successful with this concept.
The pad lock bridge is an iconic location for romance, however i found that this image is a great use of imagery as it shows hope and togetherness during the tough times within Paris.

I used a macro lens to blur out some parts of the padlocks to focus on the middle of the image. A use of alignment much like Alfred Eisenstaedt's technique that i was able to use.

The most effective image that i had captured was the
French flag in the middle of Paris. The usage of black and white as well as having colour highlights the flat within a dark time.
Knowing what has happened shows a form of symbolism and makes this image really emotional. This was heavily influenced by all three artists as bright colours are used by Martin Parr and both layout and the usage of black and white is used by the other two artists. This is one of my strongest pieces and feel that it has a powerful meaning behind it.

The final picture that i will be looking over is the picture of the couple kissing. This has a huge use of symbolism as its much like the New York photo produced by Alfred Eisenstaedt'. The reason why the image is landscape is manly due to the fact of trying to get a mid shot of the couple with the Eiffel tower in the back.

I found that this photo was over exposed and a slight camera shake due to it being dark. For me to have corrected this i should have used a tripod and a flash defuser to have corrected the image.

The usage of a collage makes the images seem as though they have a form of sequence creating a scene between each image. This has been done to show the before and after of the Paris incident.

Creating the collages

To create the collages i used an online editing software called : www.Befunky.com
This is a free software that enables anyone to edit images similar towards what Photoshop can do however, this website gives you the choice of creating collages with different images. Simple and yet affective when it comes to quick editing.

Proposal for the next project

For the next photography project I will be using all the techniques used within both projects (Identity/A Place in time), to produce an overall final product. This product will be based on both themes and merged into one manly using the theme of identity as the topic. For example for the previous project I based my assignment on my niece and nephew.

This time I would like to base it on myself portraying what I identify as the things I enjoy and what I like doing. Using the environment/ background, which is based on assignment two. I should be able to capture each element within its surroundings producing something new and unique.

I will be recording each idea onto the excising blog to create an online portfolio of my recorded work. Highlighting the positive and negative elements within all my projects, illustrating the journey in which I had taken to create each final product.

Evaluation for project two

Project two-A place in time

For this project I was going to base it on the fact that I was going to Paris as a holiday and capturing Landscapes of Paris and it’s life style. However 2 days before I arrived back into the UK, the tragic event took place of the Paris bombing. This changed the whole concept for the whole idea and I thought that I could use the images that were taken and form it in such a way that it shows a happy family in Paris to a sad and dull family who manage to unite through dark times.

To help me with this process I have used numerous photographers to become influenced by. The influence would then guide me on the path of how I would like to take my images using the techniques, which they have used, and being able to illustrate how I was able to do it.

The first artists is called Henri Cartier Bresson, a famous French photographer who specialises in capturing the subject within its environment just by taking one click rather than numerous clicks. This technique can only be done by being organised and being able to think ahead. A technique, which I tried to use as I feel that it, helped me gain more of an idea of what I wanted to capture.

The second artist that I looked at was Martin Parr, a British photographer who is famous for his abstract images that portray the British culture by using a bright artificial flash within majority of his images. He sticks with this theme, which means he also thinks ahead and sticks to a specific theme to portray some form of meaning.

The final artist that looked at was Alfred Eisenstadt, a famous American photographer/ photojournalist who has captured many famous works such as the couple kissing once the war was over. The reason why I used him as an influence was due to the fact that he captures his images using such a use of composition and lays out his images really well using the technique of black and white, thus the reason for using his techniques to create the perfect image within the development process.

My strengths within this project were that I thought about each step and how I was able to capture exactly what I needed to build such emotion. An example of this is the way in which the French flag is in color and the background is all black and white. I was able to get this technique from all artists, as that is what they did to capture each perfect image.

My weaknesses within this project were that I wish I captured more of the element of France rather than just Disneyland. This is something for me to learn from as I got to caught up within the moment.

Overall I feel that this is a strong project as it has a range of meanings behind them, which can be seen in different lights by the audience. I feel that there is room for improvement and that I can learn from this for the overall project next year.
